November 10th.....

....and the forecast is of high winds and sporadic rain. 35 years ago, in a lake several thousand miles away, the forecast was similarly ominous.

Unless you've visited the Great Lakes it is hard to imagine their awesome size. The largest, Superior, covers an area of about 35,000 square miles. That is a lot of fresh water. By comparison, England covers about 50,000 square miles.

Conan, Song posted. A good quality recording I just listened to on the cans on YouTube, while I watched the first video I posted. Quite gave me the shivers.

Cheers Hogday.

I first heard that song on a jukebox in a pub on Rose St in Edinburgh many moons ago.
By the end of the evening I knew the lyrics off by heart...

...and was getting more than a few glares directed at me:¬)

I believe that song is on the Top Ten Worst Songs Ever list...which is annoying. I like it anyway...it honors those that died in that accident.

I once saw a program on the Fitzgerald, and despite that being quite some time ago, I can still recall the cold shudder I felt at the thought of standing on the bridge in that storm, just as the wave caused the back of the ship to break - that sound it must have made and the awful realisation of what was happening.
A terrible ending, that you can only hope was mercifully quick.

Hopefully it's well behind 'Timothy' which must surely take 'top ten worst disaster songs of all time' top prize...
