The Dignity of the Flame

I hear the Olympic torch went down a trapeze wire the other day. It's good to know this noble contest of pure sporting prowess is being conducted in an atmosphere of grace and dignity!

I expect the opening ceremony to be climaxed by a formation lap dancing team from Soho, naked of course, with mini flaming tassle-torches strategically placed around the one big one. Maybe they'll be called, "The Debonaire's"?

I like your sense of humour, Hogday! I have always thought the Olympics - particularly the opening ceremony - have hyped-up silliness - read Cirque du Soleil - each succeeding city trying to outdo the last - and genuine entertainment - seeing all the athletes coming onto the field.

But then it is easy to get a bit cynical about the "amateurs" - one they don't compete naked as the ancient Greeks, two, some, like our basketball team, are out and out pros, you add state-sponsored athletes (and even state sponsored drugging as the old East Germans) - (at the 1984 LA Olympics the story goes that a reporter saw the East German women's swim team getting off the plane and he told their coach that their voices seemed awfully deep - and the coach replied "Ve come here to swim, not to sing"

All that being said, they are still fun to watch.

Some sports more than others.

Never could get into synchronized swimming.

I'll tell you when you can come out. (I'll sing `Jerusalem`)

Thanks for adding to the post. I'm with you. The money and the politics has tainted it a touch.

Then I just read of this innkeeper, bracing for the Olympic crowds (and business) replacing his room's copies of the Gideon Bible with "50 Shades Of Gray"

Bill, I had to look that book up! Guess I'm the only person on the planet who's not heard of it. Well I've been tied uo of late.

The original Olympic Games had only military-like sports in them. For instance, the javelin was thrown for accuracy. The discus was an ancient weapon even in archaic Greek times; some say it was descended from those "hand axes" which our ancestors used to throw into herds of beasts or crowds of human enemies, in hope of knocking one of them down. Wrestling was Serious Business in the Original Olympics; sometimes people lost the match by dying. I could go on and on...
