But still a twinge of a whinge from the BBC. This really does, for me, drive home that quote from an unknown British warrior, "When the lead starts flying, you're not fighting for Queen or Country, you're fighting for your mates all around you".
Sky News covered it thus:
The World War II Bomber Command Memorial is officially opened, today, Thursday June 28th,
2012

They owe me a flight in PA474. I know It'll never happen though. I acquired and repaired some of her flight instruments. Bit of an honour really at the time. (I also did some of RR299's instruments too. It was a carburettor fault that caused the crash)
There is nothing that sounds better than all four merlins...
I saw a photo of a Lancaster dropping a cloud of pink stuff. Were they roses, do you know?
Poppies.

Ok, That makes sense. Thank you!
Merlins are OK, but nothing beats the sheer NOISE of a herd of P&W R 2800's! Can you imagine what a flight deck of 2800s in Hellcats and Corsairs warming up sounded and felt like?
"Merlins are OK?" O K??? Ok. I too like a nice radial. I once helped man a Sexton SP (museum piece) and that had a radial engine. If you stood by the engine hatch and closed your eyes you'd think you were stood by a C47
If you want noise, Avon 300 series ECUs in a stream take off, Or Olympus ECUs on a 'survival' Scramble....
