Ordeal by duty - Trial by Jury

  BBC online News:

Met Police officer Anthony Long cleared of Azelle Rodney murder

I think this calls for The Bard:

"But soft, what glint through yonder carboot breaks? It is the east, and firearm is in the sun. Arise, fair sidearm, and kill the envious perp, Who is already sick and pale with grief That I, Met Pol, art far more skilled than he."

(Hat tipped to my friend, David Kenneth Ellis, for the Shakespearean form)

And the idea was being floated that ex AFO's should come back? Was this another piece of blue skies thinking from the policing brains of Policy Exchange? No thank you.

Retired: Come back? For what??

To cover the gap in AFO coverage caused by the loss of experienced staff. After this trial I would imagine most current officers will be thinking very carefully before using any form of force at all. You cannot rely on anything except that the current Home Secretary will stab you in the back if she has the chance.

I wondered what the contingencies would be. I'd be amazed if there wasn't a plan at the H.O. but buying back retired afo's must be one of the daftest.

After all these years we are all probably deaf enough not to need ear protection though.
