I thought you would like to see a road about 40 miles from my house - Mosquito Ridge Road - a favorite of the sport bike crowd - it winds along the edge of a mountain - winds around for 40 miles up to a reservoir -
I have wanted to take my car club up there but honestly some of these riders are nuts - seen them come down at 70-80 not always on their half of the road - but what a road.
There is a stretch of US 129 in western North Carolina, Eastern Tennessee that is know as the "Tail Of The Dragon." It's a rather popular biker destination mainly because it is so crooked. A number of bikers are injured there every year because of poor riding. Crowding the centerline is one of the problems. Many bikers don't think about what they are doing when they lean into a curve and the lean puts their head across the centerline.
One trooper came to the scene of an accident on that piece of road, took a quick look at the wrecked bike and rider and made the statement that the rider was dead just as he started his paperwork for the accident. One fo the witnesses told him that the Police were not supposed to be making that judgment. His reply was succinct. "There's the bike and body, and over yonder is the helmet and the rider's head is still in it. He'd leaned across centerline.
Moral of the story, stay as far from the center line as is practical and safe.
I was told by one of the locals at Forest Hill (where Mosquito Ridge Rd starts) that every year there is usually a death there.
I had heard of Tail of the Dragon QM - supposedly even Michael Schumacher has ridden it - I think there is a roadhouse along the way where they decorate the grounds and building with all the smashed "debris" picked up over the years
As far as the Centerline - man - that would get your attention - I would think as a cop coming up to this stuff you'd have to develop a macabre sense of humor
Bill. I attended a fatal on a railway. Body neatly cut in two. We still had to call the police surgeon (doctor) to confirm life extinct. He arrived, checked both halves and said, "yes top half definitely dead. Now lets have another check of the rest". A dark world has dark humour.
